Biography

Fiona O'Connell is an accomplished Australian filmmaker with over 25 years' experience crafting emotionally engaging, cinematic stories. Her work is defined by an empathetic, character-driven approach and a strong visual sensibility across narrative, documentary and commercial formats.

Her short films — With Hope, The Road Ahead, House Party, and A Letter from Reese — have screened at leading international festivals, including Sydney Film Festival, São Paulo International Film Festival and Palm Springs ShortFest.

Fiona has directed content for major brands, cultural institutions and government agencies, bringing emotional insight and a cinematic craft to commercial storytelling. She holds a Master of Media (Distinction) from RMIT University and has taught filmmaking and content creation at universities and Registered Training Organisations.

Raised in Melbourne’s North-West suburbs as the daughter of a Finnish immigrant and an Australian truck driver, Fiona brings a grounded, down-to-earth perspective to her work. She speaks a little Finnish and is fluent in truckie slang.

She moved to the Victorian Surf Coast in 2005, where she lives with her husband, their two sons and Hungarian Vizsla dog.

Fiona acknowledges the Wadawurrung people and pays respect to traditional owners throughout Australia, their culture and Elders past and present.
